Vikes Go to Battle At Zone Tournament and Play Thier Best Ball of the Year

The NVSS Junior Boys Put on a fabulous show for the home town crowd at the North Central Zone tournament this past weekend. The vikes went 3 and 2 finishing with the second place trophy, and giving DP Todd  the eventual winners a scare in the final game.

The Vikes first game was againste 7th seed Correlieu Clansman. It was a bit of a slow start but when the boys got rolling they put the under manned Correlieu team away 64-37. "I was happy that they gave our boys a run early in the game" said Mueller, it woke the boys up and gave them the incentive they needed to play thier game. After a 25-19 halftime lead the vikes erupted for a 39 point second half to take a strangle hold on the game. We had a ballanced attack this game with everyone seeing meaningful minutes. Caleb Wale led the way with 14 points, while, Braedon Bray Becket Fawcett, and Dakota Clapperton, kicked in with 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. Austen Weg and Becket Fawcett also gathered up 7 rebounds apiece, while Jonathan Mueller was 2/2 from the three point line as well as dished out 9 assists. Caleb Wale recieved the player of the game award while Becket Fawcett was honoured with the the Defensive Player of the game award.

Game 2 featured yet another head on colision with the PGSS Polars." The Polars have always played us tough said Mueller, they just keep coming at you and they never give up." The Polars have been playing really well as late, last weekend we narowly escaped with an over time victory, and this game was no different for the Vikes. Early in the game the Vikes built a 22-16 half time lead only to see the Polars lead by high scoring Tyrel Laing come storming back in the fourth quarter. It was incredible we had a 12 point lead with 3 minutes to go, but strange things can happen, and they did when both Tyrel Laing and Intepal Gill started hitting from the three point line. It was like they were throwing a rock into the ocean everything they heaved up was going in, and we compounded the problem by taking quick shots at our end of the floor. Luckily we were able to hold off the barrage and escape with a 57-56 victory. It was a good lesson for our boys especially for managing the clock when you have the lead. Dakota Clapperton lead the way with 18 points and 4 rebounds followed by Caleb Wale with 12 and 6 rebounds and Braedon Bray with 12 points. Jonathan Mueller had 6 points and 8 assists. Dakota Clapperton Was awarded the player of the game.

Game 3 featured two teams that have played each other 8 times this season. DP Todd has been our achilles heal this year said Mueller, we just seem to have a very difficult time with their physical size. Last weekend at the DP Todd tournament we were rolled over by the Trojans, and I know the boys did not want a repeat of that performance. The Boys really came to play in this one said coach Mueller. I could see that they were ready to work hard and go to battle. We hung right in there for the first three quarters which saw the Vikes pull within 6 points only to see fatigue and foul trouble stunt the run and eventually see DP Todd take advantage of second chance opportunities on the boards, and some quick steals off thier press to give them the 20 point cusion and the win. We played well but were just simply again over whelmed with thier physical size said Mueller. It was a great game except we only played 3 out of 4 quarters and you can't do that against a team like DP Todd.
Jonathan Mueller led the Vikes with 14 points and 7 assists while Braedon Bray and Dakota Clapperton kicked in 10 apiece. Austen Weg had a solid rebounding performance with 7 boards off the bench. While Becket Fawcett held high scoring guard Joel Molcak to just 6 points.
Jonathan Mueller was awarded the player of the game award.

Game 4 featured the back door battle once again between the Vikes and the PGSS Polars. This was the exact same game we played in a year ago today said Mueller, only this time we won the game and advanced to the finals. It looked like it was going to be a run away for the Vikes as they jumped out to a 40-27  halftime lead, however thier is always alot of fight in the Polars and with the help of a well executed press came storming back to close the gap. It was like De Ja Vu from game two except, this time the Vikes responded with poise. "We knew they were going to make a run they always do said Mueller however this time the boys learned thier lesson. I thought we did a fantastic job of taking care of the defensive end of the floor especially on the glass, they hit shots, but we were patient with our posessions and took advantage of our mismatches inside to continually draw fouls and score the two footer, as a result slowed thier asault and minimized the damage. The Vikes again hung on to win another tough battle with PGSS. Tyrel Laing was incredible in this game especially down the stretch scoring 7 of his 34 points in the last minute of the game. It really just came down to outlasting them said Mueller our bigs really stepped up to the plate and executed when we needed them most. Jonathan Mueller put the game on ice with three consecutive foul shots to put, puting the Vikes into the championship game in over 14 years. Dakota Clapperton lead the way once again with 20 points and thirteen rebounds while Jonathan Mueller contributed 16 points and 5 assists and Caleb Wale chipped in 13 points and 9 rebounds. It was a solid team win with all members of the team contributing to the cause.

Game 5 featured a weary Vikes team who had played thier hearts out through out the tournament, we were beat up bruised and missing one of our regular rotation players to asprained ankle. We played one more game then the 1 seed DP Todd Trojans. I knew it would be asking alot from the boys, said Mueller, but I also know that they would do thier best to compete right to the final Buzzer. The game started out by seeing the Trojans jump out to a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. We hung in there scrapping the whole way, I could see the boys were visibly tired, as the Trojans continued to tighten thier noose on the championship game with a very well executed 1-2-2 half court trap. Mentally it was taxing for the players, we had success breaking the press, but it took alot of time off the clock and really took us out of our rythem. The Trojans just kept chipping away eventually building up a 30-19 halftime lead. In the change room the boys were still in good spirits said Mueller, trully a proud team. As we talked about our second half strategey I could see a resolve in them, this was going to be a game that they would not quit they would play to the finish no matter what." The third quarter was a crazy one said Mueller, the game was becoming very physical, it just didn't seem like we were getting any calls from the officials which played right into the hands of a much bigger and stronger Trojans team. DP Todd continued to literally grind us down on both ends of the floor stretching the lead out to 40-27 it was not looking good for the Vikes midway through the third quarter, when shooting guard Braedon Bray drove to the basket and was hammered hard by two Trojan players, sending him crashing to the floor. All I remember said Mueller is seeing Braedons head hit the floor, and then both reffs looking at each other and one indicating that it was DP Todds ball....No Foul ?? I admit I completly lost it, said Mueller, I saw red and instantly tied into the officials for letting the game get to this point. I admit I was out of control at that point, and I vaguely remember the reff initiating my second technical thus ejecting me from the game. After a few choice words fort he officials on the way out of the school for a cool down period, I re-enterd the school and watched the remainder of the game from just outside of the doors. What I saw was incredible! I saw a weary team digging deep into the tank and competing....not giving up! I sat outside of that door and watched one of the most entertaing comebacks I have ever seen. The boys were playng with a renewed vigor, they were diving for loose balls, grabbing rebounds denying passing lanes and getting steals. They were playing lock down defense, and executing on offense. Jonathan Mueller went on an offensive terror hitting three straight 3 pointers one from very deep, Caleb Wale played with asertiveness taking the ball right at 6'5" center Hadyn Mocak drawing fouls scoring buckets and sinking freethrows. It was an incredible run that brought the Vikes all the way back within 4 points. It was a 16-0 run said Mueller, unfortunately fould trouble and fatigue eventually slowed the come back allowing the Trojans to regroup and limp to victory by a score of 62-46. I cant say enough about my team said Mueller. I can honestly say it is one of the grittiest little teams I have ever coached, and I am extremely proud of them. It was a fantastic finish, and in my mind they are winners! Jonathan Mueller led the way with 18 points and 4 assists hitting 3 straight 3 pointers to start the rally, while Caleb Wale kicked in with 14 and 7 rebounds.

Both  Dakota Clapperton & Jonathan Mueller were selected to the first allstar team, while Caleb Wale recieved a second allstar and Becket fawcett was awrded the best defensive player award. Braedon Bray was an honorable mention for his fine play.

Coach Mueller is very excited to see this group move on to seniors and will be watching with interest as they continue thier basketball journey. Good luck guys bigger and better things lie on the horizon for  you guys.

Vikes Scratch and Claw thier ways to finals at DP.Todd Invitational

"It was one of those weekends, said coach Mueller. And it didn't help us much that starting power forward Dakota Clapperton was sitting out with a spained ankle. We looked alot different out there with out him, he brings alot of the intangibles to our team that are hard to replace. Mueller goes on to say regardless of circumstance you have to be ready to play at all times. I think as a whole, me included, were all a little tired going into this tournament."

In game one the Vikes opened up against the Kelly Road Road Runners. We started off really strong jumping out to an early lead. We were rolling pretty good, until we started to sputter mid way through the third quarter when we looked noticably tired, said Mueller. We just got a bad bout of Layupistus, where we struggled to convert the two footer. We were working on some new stuff and when you do that somtimes you get out of sinc, and the momentum can change. Kelly Road to thier credit made a solid run at us in the fourth, but luckily we hung in there and managed to stretch it out at the end to a 58-41 victory. Kelton Mckey had an outstanding game with 15 points 5 rebounds and 3 assists, while Caleb Wale Kicked in 12 points and 4 rebounds. Braedon Bray had 11 points, and Jonathan Mueller 6 points and 10 assists.

In game 2 the Vikes once again went up against a very hungry PGSS team. It was plain and simple we were flat right off the start. I think part of the problem in that game is that we beat the very same team by 40 points the weekend before. We wern't mentally dialed in to the task at hand, and it showed in our defensive intensity and our lack of execution on the offensive end of the floor. It wasn't my best game as a coach, said Mueller and combine that with a lack of energy, and you have the potential for a very difficult game. I give PGSS credit they came ready to play and they played with pride, and they kept us on our heals for much of the game. It was a turnover afair for both teams that eventually saw Tyrell Laing launch a deep three that tied it up and put it into over time. Over time was a sea saw battle before Vikes Braedon Bray sealed the game with a big three pointer and a pair of free throws to ice it. Jonathan Mueller and Braden Bray led the Vikes with 14 points each, while Caleb Wale was the difference in over time, kicked in 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Game 3 was a disaster right off the start said Mueller, plain and simple we were gassed. DP Todd jumped on us right away and eventually wore us down and ran away with it by a score of 77-30. They brought an intensity that we couldn't match they took advantage of our weary legs plain and simple. Thier 1-2-2 half court press just devastated us and took us out of our game early. A lack of execution on our press break was a key factor in this game. It is unfortunate, but it was a hard lesson we learned said Mueller. We worked on breaking that trap all week and we knew it was coming. When we finally decided to execute it like we had practiced it there were no problems, but it was too late by that point. All you can do is swallow that loss and learn from it, and hopefully be able to respond differently the next time you are in the same situation. There were some bright spots in the game Grade 9 Forward Cody Derksen really came out and showed me somthing great said Mueller. I have never seen him play quite that well. He came off the bench, brought energy and agression, that we were badley missing. He played with out fear, he took it right at DP Todds big men and scored a big 8 points. Becket Fawcett also played well, scoring 8 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Jonathan Mueller also  contributed 5 points, 5 rebounds 5 assists, and 5 steals. It was a humbling experience for every one said Mueller. I learned alot from this weekend and I hope the boys did to, as we host the zone tournament on February 21,22, and 23rd.

Vikes Raid Cougar Cage

The Vikings traveled to Prince George on Monday, to take on the College Heights Cougars. In this game the Vikes started off extremely hot as Braedon Bray and Jonathan Mueller started the game off with some very precise three point shooting. I dont think we have had a shooting game all year that was quite that good, said Mueller. Our press was effective early, and we ran the ball really well for some easy transitional baskets. The vikes eventually ran away with the game coasting to a 67-40 victory. Braedon Bray finished with 23 points and 3 assists while Jonathan Mueller finished with 18 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. While Caleb Wale and Kelton Mckey chipped in 1o and 8 points respectively. Becket Fawcett was in foul trouble for much of the game but was still able to grab 7 boards in th contest.

Vikes Put on Show in Home tournament but come
up Short in Final

It was a fantastic home tournament, for the junior Viking Basketball team this week end, Coach Mueller said, "We got nothing but positive feedback from coaches and fans on how well the tournament was run, and I owe all of it to the fantastic group of parents we have, they just now how to get things done. It was nice to see everyone having so much fun. It just had a real inviting quality to it. The Junior Vikes opened up against Correlieu in the first game to a packed crowd and pregame introductions.

They wasted no time getting going as the vikes slammed Correlieu 68-31. Correlieu had a very athletic team, but they couldn’t match the Vikes intensity level, said Mueller, the game was over in the first quarter. We just had a real balanced attack and we played some solid defense. Jonathan Mueller was on fire from the three point line as he went 7/9 from beyond the arch finishing with 21 points 5 assists and 5 steals. It was just one of those games when the hoop looked like it was 10 feet around, everything was going in for him. Caleb Wale also had a strong game with 12 points and 5 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Braedon Bray followed close behind with 11 points. Dakota Clapperton played a well-rounded game with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists and a blocked shot, while the rest of the bench played outstanding as well.

In game 2 the vikes took on zone rivals the PGSS Polars. PGSS has given us some tough games this year, said Mueller, but in this game it wasn't a contest as the Vikes buried the Polars in the opening frame winning by a score of 76-43. I saw a determination in the boys this game said Mueller. They were not going to be denied, and as a result it was another great team effort. The key to this win was the outstanding defensive effort of Becket Fawcett. He held high scoring Tyrel Laing to just 15 points, which is exceptional considering the last two outings againste PGSS he has scored 30 or more. Becket really made him earn his shots nothing was easy, and by the end of the game it was evident that Tyrel was exhausted. Caleb Wale Led the Vikes with his outstanding post play and offensive rebounding. Caleb finished the game with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. That was a fantastic game said Mueller he was dominant on both ends of the floor. Braden Bray shot well from beyond the arch going 5/8 and, both Dakota Clapperton and Austin Weg made their presence felt both on the glass and scoring by scoring 12 points each and collecting 14 rebounds. Jonathan Mueller again played well by scoring 9 points and dishing out 9 assists.

In game three the boys were pumped and ready for yet another showdown with The number one ranked DP Todd Trojans. This game was marred with bad luck right from the start, said Mueller, as team leader Dakota Clapperton sprained his ankle in warm up. It was just flat out bad luck, said Mueller. I could see the team was deflated right from the start, but to thier credit they held their heads up went out there competed. I saw something truly inspirational in Dakota, I knew he was hurting, but he insisted he could play. A quick tape job, and a few minutes later Dakota was defending one of the best big men in the province, knocking down jump shots and corralling rebounds all on limited mobility. It is what you expect from your team leader said Mueller it was truly corrageous and, I admired him for it, and so did his team mates. It was an emotional game our boys worked hard and fought tooth and nail, but in the end we were simply overwhelmed by their size and execution of their half-court trap, said Mueller. Its back to the drawing board, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve said Mueller, and I know the boys are not going to give up. We have two tournaments left to improve upon and I can guarantee we will be there in the end, and DP Todd will know they have been in a battle. Jonathan Mueller lead the way for the vikes with 12 points shooting 4/9 from three point range and dishing out 5 assists. Braedon Bray followed close behind with 11 points and 3 assists, and Dakota Clapperton with a gutzy effort scored 8 points grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. The Vikings next action is this comming Monday againste the College Heights Cougers.

Clapperton and Wale Play Big but Vikes Still Come up Short

It was a hot and cold weekend for the comp Vikes this weekend where they went 2-1 eventually falling to thier Zone Rival DP Todd Trojans again in the finals. It was an inconsistant weekend said Viking's coach Vaughn Mueller, which is a common thing for this age group. There were times when the boys showed flashes of brilliance and then times where mistakes were compounded. This is par for the course, the boys are still learning, and they are going to make mistakes on the court. The idea is we learn from those mistakes and try and get a little bit better every game." I thought the boys worked very hard this past weekend. The key for us being able to compete for the title is were going to have to have everyone bringing thier "A" game all at the same time. If we can do this we are going to be a formidable crew to deal with when it comes to the zones tournament in February.

In game 1 the Vikes defeated the Duchess Park B team79-37. This was an excellent game for us to work on some new stuff that we were going over in in practice. In this game the Vikes had a  very balanced attack, with all members of the team contributing. Braedon Bray lead the way with 16 points while Dakota Clapperton, and Caleb Wale Kicked in 14 and 11 points a piece. Jonatahn Mueller chipped in 6 points with 15 assists. Kelto Mckey and Austin Weg with 8 points, Cody Derksen with 6 and Jordan Wall with 5. Becket Fawcett once again flirted with double figures in the rebounding department with 9 boards and 4 points.

In game 2 the Vikes faced off against the Duchess Park A Team. "This game proved to be a little more challenging as Duchess kept us on our heals and out of our rythem for much of the game said Mueller. I just felt it was a combination of not being ready to play, and them really improving."They are going to be a very dangerous team come zone time. We cant go into Zones under estimating any teams said Mueller. Its going to be a dog fight with the team executing the best coming out on top." In this game I felt we just didn't execute very well, sloppy passes, and a lack of discipline on the offensive end of the floor, allowed Duchess to hang around. You never want to let a team think they have a chance of beating you, that makes them very dangerous." The Vikes eventually wore Duchess down pulling away to a 47-41 win. Braedon Bray and Dakota Clapperton again led the vikes with 13 and 12 points respectively. Caleb Wale kicked in 7 points while Jonathan Mueller had 4 points and 7 assists.

Game 3 featured yet another battle with the DP Todd Trojans. Once again we just got off to a slow start spotting the trojans an 8-0 lead. If we are going to challenge these guys we have to make sure we are mentally ready to play, taking care of the little things boxing out making crisp passes and setting good screans if we neglect this bad things always happen. We must come out with that "NO HOLDS BARRED ATTITUDE if we are going to put our selves into the position to compete with them. We gotta be like the little dog in a big dogs yard. We have to play with a chip on our shoulder and with no fear, said Mueller. With that being said, we did have some areas in the game that was very promising. I thought we executed our offense very well. Both Dakota Clapperton and Caleb Wale played thier best games of the season. They did not back down from DP Todds imposing size under the basket, infact they embraced it, using thier quickness to thier advantage. Dakota lead the way with 18 points while Wale followed close behind with 16 points. What I saw from both of these boys in this game is an undying determination to not get bullied in the paint. They showed leadership qualities that are essential in a teams success. Now for them the challenge is going to be to bring that game every time they step on the floor. 5'2 point guard Jonathan Mueller flirted with a double double the hard way by leading the team in rebounding 7 boards and dishing out 10 assists. For Jonathan the shots wern't falling this game, so he worked very hard to contribute in other ways to make a contribution. " The Trojans simply just wore us down eventually pulling away to a 59-40 victory.

Competive Team Makes a Strong Showing in Abbotsford

It was an outstanding weekend of basketball at the WJ Mouet tournament in Abbotsford this past weekend. In their opening game the Vikes took on the hosts WJ Mouet Hawks. It was a good game as the Vikes jumped out to a 26-19 lead only to see the Hawks go on a 10-0 run closing the margin by the 3rd quarter. Coach Mueller said," poor defensive rebounding was the key to this game as Mouet came up with second chance opportunities time after time because we didn't block out." Jonathan Mueller had an outstanding game hitting 3 three pointers with a total of 15 points and added 7 assists as well. Braedon Bray and Dakota Clapperton kicked in with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Becket Fawcett had another solid rebounding game with 12 boards.

In Game 2 the Vikes took on a very big and athletic North Delta team. This game was a back and fourth sea-saw battle. "Caleb Wale literally carried our team on his back", said Mueller. "He was going up against some tall forwards the whole game. He didnt back down, he was aggressive in the block and he got great results because of it." Wale scored the last three points of the and a game high of 26 with a fantastic three point play to put the Vikes up 1 with 30 seconds to go. "What I liked about that was Caleb took the ball up strong through a defender, then he stepped up and calmly nailed the free through to put us up by one point, said Mueller. After that the Vikes played 30 seconds of outstanding defense to close the game out. "They didn't even get a shot off said Mueller, the boys really wanted this one, and it was nice to see them go out and get it!"Kelton Mckey also had a fantastic game with 9 points while Braedon Bray kicked in 7 and Jonathan Mueller 5 with 7 assists. Becket Fawcett once again grabbed 10 rebounds.

In game three the Vikes took on thier Zone Rival DP Todd Trojans. It was a good first half, with the Vikes staying close, but fatigue became a factor and the trojans eventually pulled away defeating the Vikes by 14 points. Its one of those things, said Mueller, we had two really physically tough games in a row and we just didn't have much left in the tank. We are going to have to find a way to solve them for the Zones especially Hayden Mokak as he had 26 of thier 51 points, if we are going to have a hope of making it to the Provincials said Mueller. It is going to have to be a collective effort. Brayed Bray and Dakota Clapperton lead the way for the Vikes with 11 and  8 points while both Austin Weg and Becket Fawett grabbed 8 boards.

Junior Dev Team on a Roll with a 3rd Place Victory

It was a great weekend of basketball for the development team at the Duchess Park tournament. In their opening game, they faced off against College Heights. It was a close battle most of the way that had them trailing 9-8 after the first. After a 20 point 2nd quarter, they were able to take a 4 point lead into half time. After being outscored 10-9 in the third, the lead was down to only 3 points heading into the 4th where the offence came alive again and they outscored College Heights 17-7 in the final period resulting in an impressive 13 point win. Although they only shot 4 free thows in the game (making only 2 of them) and were 0/3 on three point attempts, they shot a scorching 67.5% from the field. Hunter led the way with 27 points on 13 for 22 shooting while Chance made his first 9 shots and finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Austin also had a nice game shooting 55.5% to finish with 10 points.

In their noon tip-off game on Saturday, they faced a quick and atheletic DPSS team that beat them before Christmas in a game where DPSS was able to put the game out of reach before the half-time break. Saturday's game was a defensive battle that came down to execution at the end. At the end of the 1st, they were only able to score on two made free throws out of 4 attempts for a 2 point opening quarter; however, their tough defence held DPSS to only 6 points. In the second, they were able to outscore DPSS 11-10 and closed the gap to 13-16 at the half. In the third, the speed of DPSS started to become a factor as DPSS was able to get out and run and convert easy fast break points resulting in a 32-21 lead for DPSS going into the final frame. In the fourth, they were only able to muster another 7 points while DPSS put up 24 points in the quarter. The final score was 28-56. The game was theirs to take, however, they were unable to execute down the stretch. Cold shooting, poor rebounding and turnovers plagued them the whole game. As a team, they shot only 31% from the field and 25% from the free throw line on 4 of 16 shooting. They had good looks for most of the first half, but they just couldn't make a layup. In the second half, they faced a press and were rattled - either turning the ball over or rushing a shot nearly every possession. As a team, 19 turnovers were committed and only 15 rebounds were grabbed. Hunter lead the way with 15 points on 35% shooting while Austin chipped in 8 points on 57% shooting.

In their final game of the tournament, they came ready to play; however, injuries nearly thwarted their push for the 3rd place finish. After a quick start and some strong defensive play, they jumped to a 14-2 lead by the end of the first. After a strong first quarter, they seemed to relax a little, and were only able to score 2 points while giving up 12 for a 16-14 lead going into the half. A strong third quarter pushed the lead back up to 10 going into the final quarter, but Chance suffered a sprained finger during the period when an opposing player landed on his hand. In addition, Quin was still limping up and down the floor from a sprained ankle he sustained in the previous game against DPSS. With Chance out of the game, Kelly Road was able to attack the paint and rebound the ball and was able to pull within 6 points. Chance was reinserted with taped fingers, but was pulled again because he was unable to grab the ball with both hands because of the pain. After grabbing some pain-killersl, Chance begged to go back into the game arguing he could play through the pain and could still be effective setting screens and contesting shots. He was reinserted into the game once again and immediately set a strong screen that allowed Hunter to get an uncontested layup. Then, on the defensive end, he was able to block a shot as well. With 40 seconds left to play and the game tied at 35, Hunter grabbed a loose ball and immediately found Chance with a pass as he was sprinting up the floor ahead of everyone, but he was fouled from behind just over center with 37 seconds left. The call was an unsportsmanlike clear-path foul, and Chance was awarded 2 free throws and the ball on the side. With the game tied, Chance was clutch and hit both free throws. After a good possession and an open shot at the end of the shot clock, they finished with a strong defensive stop and forced a turnover and held the ball for the victory. They ended the game shooting 47% from the field and 50% from the line. Hunter had 13 points in the win while Austin and Chance had 8 and 7 respectively. Austin also had 3 steals in the contest as did Caleb, who had a strong defensive game and made both shots that he took. Kevin filled in well for Chance while he was out and grabbed 5 boards, 2 assists, a steal and had no turnovers.

Vikes Development on a Roll By defeating Northside 2nd Game Straight

It was a hard fought battle but in the end the Junior Vikes Development team out lasted a scrappy Northside Christian team in Omineca league play on Tuesday Night. The boys are continuing to build and improve." said Mueller, and that is the whole purpose of the development team. We are preparing these young basketball players for the next level of play,  with a steady diet of meaningful minutes and game experience you can really see them start to blossom into very capable atheletes, and that is exciting. It was a sea-saw battle for most of the game untill the Vikes took a strangle hold in the fourth quarter. At half time it was a tight game with the vikes holding a the 1 point edge. In the third quarter the game was a turnover and missed layup ordeal for both teams seeing a grand total of 8 points between both teams scored, but the game opened up in the fourth where the vikes jumped out to a 10 point lead eventually wearing down the northside team. We definately had moments where we looked really good, but there were also moments where there basketball experience really showed. Its all about baby steps. Once again Jordan Wall, Hunter Brophy, and Cody Derksen led the Vikes in scoring, while Austin Weg and Kelton Mckey had strong games as well. The vikes next action will be this weekend in Duchess Park

Hot and Cold Results For Competive Vikes

It was a fantastic weekend of basketball that featured two head to head battles with Northside Christian. The Competitive team was in action against thier freindly rivals from across the river. "It was an excellent weekend of basketball" said Mueller, "a good opportunity to shake out the Christmas rust and to prepare for the remainder of the season."

The Vikes downed Northside Christian 59-48 Friday evening at NVSS. The boys started off hot, playing outstanding team ball. "Braedon Bray scored our first 9 of his 26 points" said Mueller," which really helped us get off to a good start. As a team we were  focussing on some new set plays for our offense and they were getting Braedon some solid looks at the basket.  That was probably one of the best games I have seen Braedon play said Mueller, he really played within himself, however the bigest factor was the way our team executed on both end of the floor, it was just great to watch. It was a sea-saw battle for much of the game until the Vikes pulled away late in the fourth quarter led by Jonathan Mueller scoring 10 of his 13 points in the 4th quarter going two for two from the three point line. Other standouts in the game were Becket Fawcett again leading the team in rebounding by coralling 11 boards 6 points 3 assists and 5 steals, while Caleb Wale kicked in with 4 points 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

On Saturday the Vikes had yet another solid battle against Northside, only this time they saw a last second 3 pointer go in and out at the buzzer that would have tied the game, losing 44-41. Defensively I thought we played a really well said Mueller. We played outstanding help defense and we rebounded on the defensive end of the floor really. The offensive end was a different story, we were out of sync from the start we did not execute like we did the day before, we played alot of one on one, we didn't move the ball or run our offense with any kind of discipline. "Give Northside some credit" said Mueller they wern't going to lie down, they fought hard and kept our young Vikes on thier heals for much of the game. The Vikes made a run late in the fourth quarter taking the lead 38-36 only to see North Side rally to hit a pair of free free throws and a big three pointer to put it out of reach. "It was a valuable learning experience for all the boys." You can never take this game for granted, you have to treat each game like its a brand new one and aproach it that way every time you step on the floor. Dakota Clapperton had an outstanding game with 15 pointa 7 rebounds and 3 steals. That was one of the best over all games I have seen Dakota play said Mueller. He really stepped up and carried us for stretches. If we can get that kind of consistancy from him game in and game out it will add a whole new dimension to our team. Jonathan Mueller also had a strong game adding 12 points 5 assists and two steals. while Becket Fawcett grabbed 9 boards and five steals

Home Town Battle Ends In Split Results

The Development team tipped off the action Friday afternoon againste Northsides Junior team but came out flat. "You could clearly see that the boys wern't ready to play as Northside controlled much of the first half jumping out to a 36-17 lead. The boys to be honest looked very sleepy, said Mueller. The second half was much better as the boys came to life and and pushed the tempo and took back the second half by out scoring Northside. Both Hunter Brophy and Jordan Wall both came to life in the second half scoring 12 and 13 points but it wasn't enough as Northside hung on to a 52-36 victory. "It was a good lesson for the boys to always make sure that they are mentally prepared to play", said Mueller. This is one of the hardest skills for young players to understand. The game actually starts hours before tip off with pre game visualizing going over plays etc.

In game game two on Saturday the Development team came to play. They were focussed on the task at hand jumping out to an early lead, dominating on both ends of the floor. "Clearly the boys did not like the results from the day before, and the team that came to play in this game was focussed and dialed in" said Mueller. It was nice to see them come together as a collective unit and have the type of team success they did. The Vikes out lasted their North Side rivals by a score of 52-36 the exact opposite from the day before. cody Derksen had a break out game scoring 26 points while Jordan wall Chipped in 15. "I thought both these boys really found thier stride in this game which was really great to see", said Mueller.

Junior Development Team Run to Victory

After a slow start the Junior development team came to life and really started pushing the ball to an easy 43-21 victory over FLESS Wednesday night at the NVSS auditorium. "They actually did a decent job of running ....especially once we got the lead. We executed are offense and got some easy buckets" said coach Hara. 6'2" Cody Derksen was simply to much for for them in side in the second half as he converted easy 2 footers which really was the difference said coach Hara. "both Hunter Brophy and Jordan Wall also put in fine performances in the lop sided victory. Over all it was a very well executed game said coach Hara.

The Junor Vikes next action will feature a double header against cross town rivals North side christian after Christmas break.

Bray Hits for 25 in classic Battle with Trojans

It was a fantastic home game at NVSS last night as The Junior comp team hosted the top seeded DP Todd Trojans. "It was by far our most consistant  team effort this year said coach Vaughn Mueller. The boys are really starting to find thier stride and to understand what it means to compete and to compete for the entire 32 minutes. The Trojans after a hard battle eventually downed the Vikings 56-51.

Consistancy was somthing we had been struggling with early in this season and it was nice to see the boys repond the way they did." The Vikes started off strong taking a 27-19 lead midway through the second quarter, only to see the Trojans force some turn overs and claw their way back into the game. "Thats one thing we will have to improve on if we are going to close these tight games out. Turn overs are costly, and can lead to quick fast break points for the oposition.

Just one of many bright spots for the Vikes was thier team defense. "Our rotations and help defense is really improving said Mueller, we are comunicating better and we are rebounding stronger. I thought Both my bigs Caleb Wale and Austin Weg worked extremely hard tonight againste provincial team member Hayden Mocak." At 6'5" and 220 pounds  Mocak can be a real load in the paint and I thought our bigs held their own today.

The brightest spot in this game was the break out game of Braedon Bray he went off with 25 points 3 rebounds and 2 asists. Braedon has been playing well so far this season, but was struggling with shooting consistancy. There was none of that tonight as he shot 50% from the three point line, 67% from the field and 80% from the foul line. That was simply a fantastic game said Mueller and it couldn't have come at a better time against the top team in the zone. I was extremely proud of him."

Other stand outs in the game were Jonathan Mueller 10 points  6 assists and 3 steals while Caleb Wale added 10 point, 6 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Becket Fawcett dispite foul trouble was still able to coral 8 rebounds.

Vikes Comp Finish 3rd in Cougar Classic move to 5-2 on the Season.

The NVSS Junior Competitive team had some consistency issues this weekend, but finished strong to capture 3rd at the College Heights Cougar classic in PG.

In game 1 the Vikes took on their zone rivals PGSS Polars. Coach Mueller said "with the Polars its all about minimizing the offensive output of highscoring guard Tyrel Laing". Laing had 36 on the Vikes last weekend. In this game foul trouble was an issue, and could have cost us dearly if it wasn't for the depth of our team." said Mueller. "We were able to throw 2-3 bodies at him through out the game and by the time the fourth quarter rolled around he was exhausted and we were able to cl0se the game out." The vikes eventually wore them down and won by a score of 59-45. Caleb Wale had a break out game in the pivot scoring 27 points coralling 5 rebounds and blocking 3 shots. "That is a fantastic game for Caleb." Said Mueller, "through all is hard work he has made himself into a ligitimate big man." Jonathan Mueller (4 points and 10 assists) Becket  Fawcett (9 rebounds and 4 points) and Dakota Clapperton (12 points and 5 rebounds) also turned in with fine performances.

In game 2 the Vikes came out flat against the North West Zone Charles Hayes Rain Makers. "It is so important to be mentally ready to play" said Mueller, pre game preparation must be a consistant thing in order for these young athletes to experience optimal success. Unfortunately for us we just couldnt finish a layup, games are won and lost by executing those basic funtamentals correctly. The Vikes played excellent defense holding the Rain Makers to just 9 first quarter points and 22 points at half time. "Thats great defense said Mueller, however that defense has to be acompanied by good offense and it just wasn't there for this game. We scored a total of 10 first half points thats just not enough to put your self into a position to compete. Mueller goes on to say that this is junior basketball, and your going to have these types of games, you just dont want to have them very often." Jonathan Mueller led the Vikes with 11 points and 6 assists, and becket Fawcett once again had a strong game with 4 points and 8 rebounds.

In game three Coach Mueller saw a completely different team. "They came ready to play, they were focussed and determined to close this tournament out in a positive manor. Coach Mueller said "I walked into the changeroom for our pre game talk and I saw the boys huddled up with there arms around each other. Each taking turns stating what they were going to do to make a difference in this game. It was heart warming to see them collectively grouping together like that as one team. Often after a big loss you have an emotional and energy let down, but thats not what I saw in the change room, and that not what I saw on the court. The Vikes bounced back with a desisive 75-31 victory over the Kelly Road Road Runners to capture third place in the tournament. "Thats team maturity" said Mueller. The ability to bounce back and battle through adversity is a huge thing in competitive sport if your going to have success. I was so proud of the guys they played an incredible game with all members contributing to the cause."We had 5 players all score in double figures said Mueller that is huge, having that balanced attack is so important. Caleb Wale once again led the way with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Dakta Clapperton chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds, Becket Fawcett contributed 13 points and 14 rebounds, Braedon Bray added 12 points and Jonathan Mueller had a very strong game scoring 10 points, adding 12 assists and 9 steals. A shining example of our willingness in this game was when 5'1" Jonathan Mueller stood in and took a charge and was mowed over from a 6'4" Kellyroad player. Thats what you call team defense and sacrifice and I saw that from each and every member of my team in this game this game."

The Vikes next action will be this Monaday at 5:00 against arch rival DP Todd TroJans come out and watch and support your team.

Vikes Comp Team Chase Cougars out of the Building
and Move to 3-1 on the Season

The Junior Vikes came to play Monday night at the NVSS auditorium as they hosted the College Heights Cougars out of Prince George. "Any time you are playing against a team from your own zone it is very important that you come ready to play and you get that win. Every win counts in the season standings and for the seatings in the Zone Tournament in February." said coach Mueller." And thats just what the Vikes did as they built an early lead and never looked back pulling away to a 66-35 victory." Fantastic defensive pressure  and solid ball movement helped the Vikes get easy high percenatge shots through out most of the game. "Over all I thought the team played a fairly ballanced game, we especially shot well from the perimeter shooting 45% from the field and 36% from the 3 point line." Mueller said. Jonathan Mueller led the way for the Vikes with 17 points and 7 assists while, Dakota Clapperton and Braedon Bray kicked in with 12 and 9 points respectively. "I thought our bigs rebounded very well Beckett Fawcett, Austin Weg, and Caleb Wale all had close to 7 rebounds each. Over all I was very pleased with the boys efforts." said Mueller.

The Vikes next action is this coming Thursday where the Dev Vikes Take on the Ft. St. James Falcons. In Fort St. James and The Competivive and Development team travel to Prince George for both the Kelly Road Invitational and the College Heights Invitational.

Vikes Comp Team off to Solid Start at PGSS Tournament.

Congradualtions to the Junior boys comp team for finishing second in the PGSS invitational this past weekend. "The boys started off againste PGSS a bit slow" said coach Mueller, chalk it up to nerves and it being the first game of the season. We just kind of went to sleep after the first quarter, somthing you dont want to do especially against a good team. Thankfully the boys responded in the fourth and came roaring back for a very exciting 61-60 victory. Newcomer Austin Weg had an outstanding game leading the Vikes with 15 points 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. "He is going to be a very nice addition to our roster this year. He has size, athleticism, and he is very coachable" said Mueller. Braedon Bray shot well from the perimiter adding 13 points, while Jonathan Mueller chipped in with 8 points and 5 assists.  Becket Fawcett was instrumental on the defensive end of the floor defending high scorer Tyrel Laing and gathering up 15 rebounds.

In game 2 the Vikes took on Duchess Park and jumped out to quick lead. The boys looked more relaxed and executed on both ends of the floor. The Vikes won this game coasting to a 44-38 victory. Jonathan Mueller lead the team with 14 points and 8 assists. "I thought Jonathan played a solid game said Mueller" He scored well, but more importantly he got every one else around him involved and that is an important trait in a point guard. Dakota Clapperton also played well kicking in 12 points 4 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

In the tournament finals The Vikes faced last years Zone Champions DP Todd Trojans. Mueller said "They are very big, strong and athletic. They have a three headed monster in the Mocak triplets. In order to beat this team we would have to hold them down especially on the glass." In this game the vikes came out to compete. The Vikes jumped out to a 33-29 lead late in the second quarter only to see the Trojans come roaring back to take a 4 point lead at half time. Midway through the 3rd Quarter the wheels fell off the Vikes when Jonathan Mueller picked up his fourth foul and had to sit down,. Mean while DP Todds 6'5" Hayden Mocak went wild on the offensive glass scoring a game high 27 points. The Vikes couldnt respond and lost a tough one 66-52. Coach Mueller said "We did a great job for 3 quarters of that game unfortunately it takes 4 quarters to win. Againste good teams like DP Todd you can't let up for a second or they will make you pay." Vikes Braedon Bray led the way with 13 points while Jonathan Mueller chipped in 10 and added 7 assists and Dakota Clapperton added 10 points and 5 rebounds. Caleb Wale had a break out game with 9 points and 5 boards. Mueller feels that offensively the boys executed very well, however defensively we struggled, especially with defensive transition and on the defensive glass. "Essentially that was the difference in the game." said Mueller

The Vikes Next action will be againste College Heights this coming Monday at 3:30

Undermaned Vikes drop to 1-1 as Injury and Foul Trouble Plague the Junior Development team vrs Northside Christstian

It was one of those games 6.1" forward Cody Derksen sprained his ankle in warm up before the game started, and foul trouble compounded the issue, as  Northside Christian downed the undermaned vikes squad by 20 Thursday night at NSCS. Coach Hara said " With out a big man it put us behind the 8 ball right away"  Northside started a strong starting line up with both size and atheleticism. Bright spots for the Vikes were solid performances from Austin Penner and Hunter Brophy. As they chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively. The vikes started the game with only 8 players, but were quickly down to 5 as two developed foul trouble quickly when trying to guard bigger more physical players. The vikes made one last run when Cody with a taped up ankle  and Jordan came to from the bleachers for relief, but they were unable to respond. Coach Hara said despite the loss there were some bright spots, as the vikes executed there in bounds plays very well. Good work boys!

Junior Boys Basketball Team Anticipating a Strong Start

The Junior Vikings are anticipating a strong start to this years season after an extensive off season of regional play, basketball camps and individual work outs! coach Mueller is as excited as as his players for the the season to begin. "Finally it is here!" said Coach Mueller. The Vikings will be traveling to Prince George to play in the PGSS invitational. It is going to be a great opportunity to see where we are at in the zone right off the hammer as all three of the zone medalists from last year will be in this tournament.  "Its exciting stuff" Mueller says the boys have really committed them selves to this season with extensive off season work outs. And the improvemnt has been evident in the first three weeks of practice. "I have been so impressed with all of the boys". said Mueller. They had a vision, set goals  and made the commitment to get better as a team. Mueller believes they are ready for new challenges this season. They will have a quick measure as they step on the court this Friday against PGSS a team that beat them in the silver medal game in last years zone tournament. This years Junior team has 6 players that participated on Basketball BC regional teams so there is no shortage of talent on the team. Mueller feels he has a excellent ballance of skill, size, athleticism and depth to pose a serious challenge to most junior teams in the area. So come out this season and watch some quality Viking Basketball action.

Junior Development Hosts LDSS in Home Opener

The Junior Boys Development team opened up against Lakes District Secondary with a victory on Tuesday night. It was a bit of a shabby game which can be expected for the first game of the year, said coach Mueller. This is a very young crew which featured two grade 8's in the line up. grade 10 Kelton Mckey proved to be a difficult check to handle, as he dominated on both ends of the floor  as he compiled 15 points and 8-10 rebounds which is a solid game. Other stand outs were Cody Derkson and Jordan Wall. Both of these boys really commited to a off season training program, and it was very evident that their skills have improved. it is always great to see the hard work in the off season transfer on to the court said coach Mueller. "When these young players make the conection between their hard work in practice and there successes there is no holding them back, they just want to get better and better"

The next action for the Junior development team is this thursday at 5:00 at Northside Christian.

Nechako Valley Secondary Junior Viking Basketball

Vikesbasketball.blogspot.ca

Dear Parents,

We, Vaughn Mueller & Jeremy Herra are very pleased to be coaching your son this year. This past off season we had a very active group of boys working hard and preparing for this basketball season. Many of our players participated on Basketball BC Regional teams, club teams, as well as attended basketball camps. In the grade 8-10 age level we had 6 boys try out and make regional teams this past spring. That is a testament to their perseverance and drive to get better. We have had a fantastic turnout for morning work outs adding important skill aspects to their games. Both coaches are very excited to begin this season and have great expectations. We will once again be fielding two junior boy basketball teams, a competitive team and a development team. All players will be assigned to their designated team after the November 13-15 preseason training camp. This Training camp will give all coaches a chance to look at the players and assess and assign them to either the competitive or development team. After the Training camp regular basketball practices will commence. It is important to keep in mind that being assigned to the development team is not a demotion, but an opportunity. It is an opportunity to get better, get more playing time, thus preparing you’re self for the future. Good luck everyone It is going to be an amazing season!

Coaches,

Vaughn Mueller (competitive coach)

Jeremy Herra (development coach)

Vikesbasketball.blogspot.ca

It is expected that all players make a commitment to attend all practices.  If you can’t make it be responsible and notify your coaches well in advance. Please do not schedule haircuts and other activities during practice times. Remember basketball is a team game and attending practice is part of being a committed team member.

It is expected that you come to practice prepared to work hard. Practice gear should be worn to all practices and you should bring a water bottle. Come 10-15 minutes early in order to change and stretch. After practice is over it is expected that all players assist in putting away equipment and cleaning up.

Expectations

Junior basketball is the next step of basketball in our school, and with it come’s new expectations and challenges. It is going to take discipline, dedication and sacrifice to achieve your goals. As a player you will need to do the following “Bee’s” in order to have success:

1.    Be studious   commit yourself to your school work. Take care of your academic responsibilities first. Be the best student you can be, work hard and manage your time wisely.

2.    Be grateful  - Be thankful to your parents & coaches for this opportunity.

3.    Be a great teammate – We are all in this season together so be positive and work together. Come to practice and be prepared to work hard and get better, don’t shortcut yourself and your team by not putting forward your best effort.

4.    Be on time – don’t let your team down by making a habit of being late. Come fifteen minutes before practice to prepare yourself, and an hour before games.

5.    Be a good representative of NVSS on and off the court. It is expected that you conduct yourself with dignity at all times. Set a solid example for everyone around you. Portray confidence not arrogance. Be humble and display sportsmanship. Be somebody to look up to in all aspects, not just basketball.

6.    Be communicative – if you’re unsure of something ask. If you’re upset come and talk to me first.  Keeping those communication channels open is essential in building a trusting and successful team.

7.    Be healthy- a basketball season can be long and grueling, make sure you look after your body. Always warm up & cool down, stretch and eat good quality food, and get proper amounts of sleep, stay away from soft drinks, junkfood and especially energy drinks.

Travel

Now that you are in junior basketball there will be more traveling. Our team will travel either by activity bus (24 passenger bus) or a chartered bus from the school district. When traveling on long trips it is good to bring a pillow for comfort.

Travel is a big part of our season. In order for this to be as safe as possible here are guidelines that need to be followed when travelling.

1.    Conduct on the bus must be quiet, respectful, and calm.

2.    Passengers must remain seated in their seat whenever the bus is moving or operating in or around traffic.

3.    Passengers may only enter and exit using the front door.

4.    Emergency exits are for emergencies only.

5.    Horseplay of any sort will not be tolerated.

6.    Keep the bus clean and tidy at all times.

7.    All bags and gear must be stowed in the luggage cage(s).

Players are responsible to double-check their checklist. Do not pack anything that is unnecessary for the trip or which might lead to team, school or athletic code rule infractions. In light of athletic code infractions in the past, random luggage checks are a possibility.

When staying in hotels there are several special considerations to keep in mind. The coach or delegate will make all room assignments. Only players registered in each room are to be in that room unless directed otherwise by a NVSS coach or chaperone. Be considerate and respectful of other hotel guests, hotel property and management. Any team member responsible for disrupting other guests or causing concerns or damage will be dealt with severely and quickly. All curfew and other instructions given by coaches or chaperones must be followed. Horseplay is unacceptable. As each situation warrants, players will be expected to do clean up, pay retribution, cover expenses, travel home at their own expense, experience various suspensions or any number of other consequences.

Uniforms

This year each player will be provided with two sets of uniforms, practice gear, and team bags. Please wash uniforms and hang to dry do not put them in the dryer as it could ruin the cresting. It is fine to wash and dry the practice gear. It is expected that the uniforms and apparel package be treated with care and returned in good condition at the end of the season.

Schedule

We have planned two solid schedules for both teams. Each team will have one overnight road Trip not counting the Provincial tournament if we qualify. The Development team will play the Omineca schedule and 2-3 tournaments while the competitive team will play a tournament schedule with home and aways with teams in our zone. Both Teams will participate in the Omineca tournament.

Home Games

Home games are dress up days

For home games it is expected that all players be in the gym one hour prior to the game beginning for pregame discussions, stretching, and game preparation. Players will be responsible for game set up and take down. Both Competitive and development teams will be responsible for managing the score clocks for each other’s games.

Away Games & Tournaments

Away games may require that the players be dismissed early from school in order to travel. All players should come prepared that day with their gear. This includes: Pillow (for long Trips) uniforms, water bottle, shoes $ etc. All players will be given a trip itinerary that will include a tournament schedule as well as hotel information. A permission slip will be attached which will need to be signed and returned to the coach. All $ should be made payable to Nechako Valley Secondary school and given to Lorraine Horita in the office.

Season Costs

A set season cost of $500.00 for the competitive team and $250.00 for the Development team will be assigned to the teams. All Players will be required to pay this fee prior to the season beginning or in 3 installments. Expenses will include: hotels, transportation, and sub expenses.

Fundraising

We always encourage parents to participate in helping organize fundraising opportunities to offset expenses.

Parents Roles

As usual it is always great to have parents helping to organize events. This year in particular we are going to need extra help as we are going to host two major tournaments and one minor tournament here at NVSS. We are hosting a mini tournament for the development team just prior to the Christmas break. And of course in February we will be hosting The Viking Invitational and the Zone Tournament both of which are going to require a significant amount of work.

For both tournaments we are going to need the following:

Score Table Manager – Responsible for overseeing table personnel, and score keeping assignments.

Canteen Organized and stocked – responsible for canteen schedule and ordering supplies.

Coaches Room - organized and stocked.

Referees Room - organized and stocked.

Tournament Draw – responsible for posting game sheets and updating the tournament draw board

Sponsors & Awards – responsible for organizing the awards presentations and the player of the game awards, as well as seeking out  potential sponsors for coupons, etc.

Development Model for Nechako Valley Basketball
This year we will be following the same model we developed last year. We will have both a Competitive team and a Development team. This was a great system we built as it allowed players to develop according to their abilities, but still get a taste of higher levels of play. Players that were a part of last years development team gained valuable playing time and improved their skills substantialy. Many of those boys who were on the Development team are going to play a significant role this year with the competitive team.

Player Placement Model

Prior to the commencement of the basketball season each group, both boys and girls grades 8-12 will participate in a two day assessment camp. At this camp players will be assessed on the following attributes: Attitude, Skills and fundamentals, emotional development, and coachability. Each player will then be designated and placed at one of the following levels so they achieve optimal growth.  A panel of coaches will work as a team to assess and designate where each player should best be placed. This panel will assess levels using the following model.

1.       Attitude and commitment - Is the player punctual, reliable, committed, and easy to work with?

2.       Skill development and ability – how fundamentally evolved is the player?

3.       Emotional development – How does the player handle him self on and off the court?

4.       Coach ability – is the player a good listener, does he respond to direction in a positive manor, and does he put into action the instruction he receives?

Team Philosophies

Grade 8

All players assigned to the grade 8 team will play the Omineca schedule with the possibility of one additional tournament.

Playing time

*Developmental teams are designed to build a culture of preparation, effort, improvement of skills and leadership. The responsibility of practicing and preparing goes along with the right to equal playing time.

As this is a crucial development year for young players playing time will be equal for all participants. This gives all participants an opportunity to show what they can do, and to have an opportunity to develop their skills and the understanding of the game.

Coaches reserve the right to limit playing time if:

1.       The player is not committed to coming to practice on a regular basis.

2.       The player’s behavior or conduct in the school or on the team is not in good standing.

3.       The player has been injured and the coach feels it is unsafe for the player to continue participating.

Grade 8-10 Junior Development Team   (equal playing time)

*This team will play the Omineca schedule as well as 2-3 tournaments throughout the season.

Developmental teams are designed to build a culture of preparation, effort, improvement of skills and leadership. The responsibility of practicing and preparing goes along with the right to equal playing time.

The junior development team will be primarily made up of grade 9 boys but may include both grade 8’s and 10’s depending on the player’s level of development. Grade 8 players that are placed on this team must demonstrate that they are capable of playing at this level both emotionally and physically. All grade 10’s that are placed on this team are assigned with the intent of more playing time then they would other wise received on the competitive team, and with the intention that this player will have more opportunity to develop their game. The junior development team is designed so that players continue to develop their games with meaningful playing time. Some players through out season may float between both the development and the competitive team giving all players an opportunity to receive more game time. Once again this is a crucial development year for young players. Playing time will be equal for all participants. This gives all players an opportunity to show what they can do, and to have an additional opportunity to develop their skills and their understanding of the game.

Coaches reserve the right to limit playing time if:

The player is not committed to coming to practice on a regular basis.

The player’s behavior or conduct in the school or on the team is not in good standing.

The player has been injured and the coach feels it is unsafe for the player to continue participating.

Grade  8-10 Junior Competitive Team

Competitive teams should build upon the developmental culture…those with superior skill development, leadership/citizenship tendencies and tactical understanding/performance will earn the right to more playing time

The grade 9-10 Competitive Team, are for those players whom have demonstrated that they are capable of playing at a competitive level. This team will play a regular tournament schedule and compete for a Zone Championship as well as an opportunity to qualify for the Provincials. This team will be managed similar to that of the senior teams.  All players will be expected to make a commitment to the team. This includes working hard on their grades, attending practices, and tournaments. It is with the understanding that playing time will be designated to players as seen fit by the coach, but with the understanding that most players will have the opportunity to play. It is also with the understanding that the players on the competitive team that receive less playing time will have the opportunity to gain meaningful minutes on the development team.

The competitive philosophy will be imbedded into all players thus paving the road and preparing them for senior basketball.

Coaches reserve the right to limit playing time if:

The player is not committed to coming to practice on a regular basis.

The player’s behavior or conduct in the school or on the team is not in good standing.

The player has been injured and the coach feels it is unsafe for the player to continue participating.

Grade 11-12 Senior Teams

The Senior teams here at NVSS have enjoyed a rich history of success both in our Zone and Provincial tournaments. For our Senior athletes this is the final two years of their high school journey . Many of these players would have all ready played 11 years of basketball from grades K-10. They would have all came up through the system developing essential basketball skills that would allow them to compete at a very high level. Thorough practice plans and a competitive schedule will ensure and prepare our teams for optimal success.  Expectations on this team are to attend all practices, fundraising and team functions with the understanding that the goal is to compete for a Zone and Provincial Championship.

Coaches reserve the right to limit playing time if:

The player is not committed to coming to practice on a regular basis.

The player’s behavior or conduct in the school or on the team is not in good standing.

The player has been injured and the coach feels it is unsafe for the player to continue participating.

Jr Vikes Take on local Regional Team

The Jr Vikes defeated the U-14 North East Regional team in two barn burners in as many weeks. Game one saw Beckett Fawcett step to the line with 0.0 seconds on the clock and drain two free throws to give the Vikes a 2 point victory 63-61. Beckett Fawcett and Dakota Clapperton led the way for the Vikes with 20 and 15 points while Tyrel Laing and Jonathan Mueller chipped in with 22 and 14 points respectively.

In game two the regional team had 6 solid 3 point attemps with less then 15 seconds left to tie the game but unfortunately were unable to get one to fall allowing the Vikes to escape with a 60-57 victory. Dakota Clapperton ancored the Vikes offence with 26 points while Braedon Bray rained in 15 points from beyond the arc. Tyrel Laing was on fire nailing down 7 three pointers and finishing with 34 points while Jonathan Mueller contributed 15 points and assisted on easy baskets under the hoop. Both Cole Dinsdale and Josh Gillis made an impact under the glass.

over all the pair of games were good for both teams and the development for these young players. Well done every one!

Two Boys Planning to Attend Point Guard Academy from NVSS Junior Vikes

http://www.pgcbasketball.com/

PGC Basketball provides intense, no-nonsense basketball training for male and female players, as well as coaches. Our courses are designed to teach players of all positions to play smart basketball, to be coaches on the court, and to be leaders in practices, games, and in everyday life.

Braedon Bray and Beckett Fawcett are traveling this summer to Olds Alberta, to attend the Point Guard College Basketball Camp. This pristigious basketball camp develops not just basketball skills, but leadership skills as well. It offers both an academic and a skill components of the game.

Braedon Bray attended the basketball camp last year and came back with a changed mind set on how he was going to practice the game of basketball. Coach Mueller said, "He made some significant changes in his work ethic and his approach to the game, and as a result became one of our main contributers on the court this season. He was one of the best 3 point shooters in the Zone this year." said Coach vaughn Mueller, and I feel Point Guard College helped him understand how to get better.

Beckett Fawcett another player who had a break out season last year is also attending this camp. "Beckett has alot of strengths that are very valuable in any athlete. He is tough, hard working, and a natural leader. These are the basis of all the other skills that are essential to becoming a great basketball player", said Mueller. "The thing I like the most about Beckett is he understands his role, he likes playing the gritty defense, hitting the floor for a loose ball, or battling for rebounds. Not all players like that aspect of the game, and for the most part that is the a very essential ingredient in the game of basketball. What I admired most about Beckett is, regardless of how his practice or game went good or bad, he always came and shook my hand and thanked me after  for coaching, trully a classy kidd with a bright future."

I would recomend this camp to any basketball player as it promotes and teaches solid basketball values. Check it out and if you cant get into it this year, mark it on your callendar and try next year. Its never to late to get better.

Jonathan Mueller and Tyrel Laing at Trinity Western University for the BC TryOuts

Both Tyrel and Jonathan traveled down to Langley for the Provincial team tryouts. It was a intense couple of days and a grueling process. Both boys worked extremely hard but unfortunately only Tyrel was selected to the Provincial team. It came down to the last couple of picks for Jonathan as he just missed making the team as he was ranked 25th only the top 24 were selected. Both boys learned alot which is progress and another valuable step to becoming sucessful on the basketball court.

Vanderhoof Boys Make Good Showing For Regional Tryouts!

It was a fantastic showing for 8 Vanderhoof Boys who tried out for the Basketball BC Regional Team this spring. Dakota Clapperton, Braedon Bray, Beckett Fawcett, Caleb Wale and Jordan Unger all made the Under 15 North East Regional Team. They will be traveling south to Langley for the Zone Provincial Tournament on the May long weekend. In the U-13 the U-13 division Jonathan Mueller, Hunter Brophy, and Caleb Jensen will be traveling down on the May 24th weekend in Langley for thier tournament.

U-13 regional coach: Vaughn Mueller said that all these boys have been working extremely hard to improve thier basketball games. Many of them have been working out at 7:00 am in the morning, as well as playing club basketball. With a steady diet of basketball funadamentals and hard work they have given them selves an opportunity to not only make the team, but to make a good showing down in Langley.

Mueller goes on to say, " The Langley tournaments are a show case for all elite calibre athletes in the province. From these tournaments Provincial coaches will hand sellect athletes to invite to the Provincial team trouts.

Outstanding Season for both Junior Vikes Teams

This was a fantastic season for both Junior Vikes Basketball teams. Congradulations to the Competitive team that capured a bronze medal in the Zone Championships, and to the development team that made huge strides in thier development this year. It was a fantastic finish to a great season! There was alot of improvenment in all of the boys, which is going to go along way for the future of the Viking Program. Grade 10 players: Blake Kingsley, Cole Daniel, Derek Hunsaker, Tyler Dennis, Matt Priest, Mckay Jenson, Alex Pratt, Sheldon Currie and Jason Chew will make the jump to seniors next year which should be a very promising team. Thank you for your commitment and hard work this season I really enjoyed working with all of you.

Players returning to the junior squad are: Dakota Clapperton, Braedon Bray, Beckett Fawcett, Kelton Mckey, TC Chaisson, They will be joined by new comers:  Jonathan Mueller, Cody Derksen, Austen Penner, and Chris Walker and more. This team should be a very competitive team that has the potential to once again challenge for a zone title. Many of the players have been doing there home work, taking care of buisness and continuing to develop there games through individual work outs, Monday night pick up basketball and by joining Nechako Lakes Club basketball or by trying out for regional teams. All these extra opportunities are essential to player development and to the future of the Viking Program. As Coaches of the Program Coach Simrose and Mueller are especially proud of the desire, willingness and insight these young players have. Congradulations boys the future looks good, Keep up the good work!

Junior Viking Basketball
Season update:
Hello every one, Just a reminder that we have approximately three weeks left in the regular season. I have been extremely pleased with all the boys progress this year. I have seen huge improvement in their attitude, their understanding of the game, and their skill development.  The boys have remained committed and focused despite some very cold weather that forced the cancellation of both games and practices. I am very excited about the next three weeks, and I look forward to watching them continue through this journey. The 16 boys that made the commitment to come to practice and work hard are being rewarded for their efforts. The Development team (the future of our program) has made huge improvements so far and are showing that they are developing the skills that will help make them valuable contributers to the Viking Program. The Competitive team has shown that they have got what it takes to win big games. Their competitive drive and willingness to make sacrifices and to work hard at practice is evident. The next three weeks will be very exciting as we have travel to the DP Todd on 27-28th then we host our tournament on Feb. 3-4th , followed by the Ominica’s on the Feb 11th. Our last tournament is the Zone Tournament on Feb. 17 - 18th in Quesnel at Correlieu Senior Secondary. We will get the opportunity showcase all we have learned this year. In this tournament we will be suiting up 12 players only, although any Development player who are interested in coming are welcome to come and help out on the bench, and cheer their team onThere will also be a few exhibition games during the weeks to come. Monday the 30th the Competitive Team will travel to College Heights with the senior boys for a game in the evening. Some Development Team players will be asked to round out the roster of 12.  On Tuesday Jan. 30th the Development Team will travel to Burns Lake for an Omineca game, again a few Competitive Team members will be asked to join this group as well.
Home Tournament
When we host our tournament on February 3-4th it is going to be a very busy weekend for me, as I will be setting up the tournament, coaching six games, and refereeing 2 games. I have asked Terri Daniels if she would be interested in organizing the canteen over the weekend. She will be contacting you for ideas and volunteer time. The Junior Girls made a profit of $700.00 from theirs, so it should be an awesome opportunity to do a little fundraising. None of the boys will be required to pay for this tournament. Referee’s fees will be paid by visiting team’s entry fees. Some of the boys may be asked to work the score tables when they are not playing in a game, any parents interested in helping out on the score table are welcome as well. I will post a schedule for sign up.
If anybody has any questions, please don’t hesitate to text, phone, email me, or check vikesbasketball.blogspot.com
Thanks,

Junior Vikes Development Team Defeats Fort
Last night the D team traveled to the fort for an Ominica showdown.  The Vikes after a slow start cruised to victory by a score of 43-17 Braedon Bray and Cole Daniels lead the way 16 and 15 points, while Caleb Wale chipped in 5 points and 12 rebounds. Kelton Mckey scored 8 points and had 3 steals. "A lot of good things happened in the game", said Mueller. We started out slow, part of the reason was they were playing a very physical brand of basketball. This was good because the boys had to learn to take care of the ball, and to move the ball to get open shots. "When you play against a scrappy team like that you have to execute your game plan with discipline and I thought they did an excellent job of that, especially in the second half", said Mueller. The Vikes shot 38 foul shots in the game but only hit 24 of them for 50% from the foul line. "That will have to be a stat that we will have to improve if we are going to close out games, especially tight ones", said Mueller. "Foul shooting is such an important part of the game." The Vikes next game is this Saturday at 10 am at NVSS the Vikes will host back to back games with arch rivals Northside Christian school.

                     New team Alignments
On Monday December 1st we had a team vote with the grade 10’s regarding the future of their team. I asked them the following questions:
1.       I prefer to keep the 10’s separate as a team in practice. The team voted 9-1 to keep the 10’s with the 9’s.
2.       I want to compete with just the 10’s in the zones. The team voted 8-2 for keeping some 9’s on the team.
3.       I want to move some 9’s up, but understand that my playing time and position on the team may be altered as a result. The team voted 9-1 for bringing up grade 9 players to compete for a Zone Championship.

After talking with Joel Mueller & Andrew Vogelsang we have decided it would be in the best interest of all the boys to re-align the teams. We feel we have put into place a system that will benefit all, and give them optimal playing time and an opportunity for a competitive team to experience success.

We have comprised a system that will give all the players an opportunity for growth and success. We have divided the teams up into 3 categories competitive, floating, and developmental.

The competitive category are the players that we feel can play and compete at a very high level.  The emphasis on this team will be to compete at a high level, and to experience competitive success. These players will predominately play on this team, but may be moved up or down depending on performance, and commitment.

The Floating Category is for those players who have demonstrated solid potential but who may need more game time and practice time to develop further. This category will play on both the competitive team and the developmental team. This will give them an opportunity for additional game experience, allowing them to grow as a player. Coach Mueller and Vogelsang will be assessing this group constantly to see who will best fit in to the competitive category and who will benefit from playing down. The weekly selections may change depending on performance and commitment to practice. Individuals in this group will be assigned to their tournament and Omineca games weekly.

The Developmental Category is for those players that demonstrate potential but are still very much in that skill building phase of their development. The philosophy behind this team will be more on development and less on winning, more game time & equal playing time. These players, depending on their development and attitude and commitment can advance to the floating category.

This system will allow the possibility of advancement and opportunity for all to experience playing time and success. We understand that you may not always be playing on the team that you would desire to be, however we feel this system will give all an opportunity to experience success, both developmentally, and competitively. So remember come to practice prepare to work hard. Commit yourself to getting better every day. If you do this good results will follow.

Coach Mueller & Vogelsang

Grade 10 Juniors show solid potential at College Heights
Over the weekend, the Grade 10 basketball team took part in the College Heights Basketball Tournament.  On Friday night the boys played the host team and were defeated; however it was only their second game of the season and we were missing some players but overall they grew as a team and learned a lot.

The second game on Saturday morning was against Duchess Park S.S. The boys played a very intense game and were in the lead for a majority of the game. We played strong on the boards and our defense was very strong. We took a lead into the final 2 minutes and surrendered points due to fouls and we lost by 3. Overall, it was a great game and the team really started to gel nicely.
Our last game was against Kelly Road and our boys closed the game out this time. They kept the pressure on and worked hard until the final buzzer. They were glad the got rid of the “curse” with the win and were very happy with the overall result.
Though we could have taken the second game and finished higher than 7th place, I feel our boys played well and grew greatly as a team. I was proud of all and was happy with the intensity that they showed.

Solid Start
For grade 9 Vikes in Kelowna this Weekend!

The grade 9 Vikes traveled to Kelowna this weekend to The Okanagon Mission Junior boys invitational. They opened up against the home team in front of a packed gym, losing a tight defensive battle 20-15. "The boys were a little nervous I would say, this is common for the first game of the season" said coach Mueller. "We just didn't execute the little things that we normally do". Jordan Wall new to the vikes this year had a break out game with an outstanding defensive performance, as well as capturing the game star award.

The Vikes second game was played against Rutland Secondary out of Kelowna. They jumped out to an early lead, but had a lapse in the third quarter which saw Rutland come storming back. It was a sea saw battle to the end which saw the Vikes dodge a last second shot for the 1 point victory 41-40."This is typical with young teams", Mueller said, understanding game situations are very important in order to develop the consistancy needed to close out games. Becket Fawcett was chosen as the game star racking up 9 points 7 rebounds and 8 steals, while Kelton Mckey chipped in with10 points.

In game 3 the vikes played against Similkameen out of Keromeos. "This was a solid group of grade 10's that we played, Mueller said. "We played a solid game for the most part with the exception of one lapse at the beginning of the fourth quarter, that saw Similkameen break the game open and eventually close it out by a score of 44-30. Game star, Dakota Clapperton Lead the way with 10 points while Becket Fawcett put in another solid defensive effort, with 12 rebounds, 3 steals as well as chipping in with 6 points.

Game 4 vrs LV Rogers out of Nelson was by far our most consistant game of the tournament. We found our shooting range, executed our offense and played with confidence through out the game. Braedon Bray was the games leading scorer with 16 while Dakota Clapperton contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds. Becket Fawcett contributed 6 points and 10 rebounds.

Other standouts included Caleb Wale, Kelton Mckey, Jordan Wall, and  TC Chaisson.
Over all a solid weekend for this young and up comming Viking squad.

Junior Viking Basketball Season Overview (grade9’s)
For: updates, scores, itineraries, practice times, news paper articles and departure times go to: vikesbasketball.blogspot.com
Welcome everyone to what is shaping up to be a fantastic season! It has been a great summer and fall, full of hard work and successes. Many of you have been working hard in your fall sports and, or were working out preparing for this season, congratulations on all your progress.
Expectations
I have great expectations for this group this season. I have been anticipating the start of this season for some time now, and can’t wait to get this group on the floor. Junior basketball is the next step of basketball in our school, and with it comes new expectations and challenges. It is going to take discipline, dedication and sacrifice to achieve your goals. As a player you will need to do the following “Be’s” in order to have success:
1.      Be studious commit yourself to your school work. Take care of your academic responsibilities first. Be the best student you can be, work hard and manage your time wisely.
2.      Be grateful to your parents & coaches for this opportunity. It is a lot of work being a parent and coach as  they give up personal & family time to provide you with this opportunity, so always be respectful of this.
3.      Be a great teammate – We are all in this season together so be positive and work together. Come to practice prepared to work hard and get better, don’t shortcut your self and your team by not putting forward your best effort.
4.      Be on time – don’t let your team down by making a habit of being late. Come fifteen minutes before practice to prepare yourself, and an hour before games.
5.      Be a good representative of NVSS on and off the court. It is expected that you conduct your self with dignity at all times. Set a solid example for everyone around you. Portray confidence not arrogance. Be humble and display sportsmanship. Be somebody to look up to in all aspects, not just basketball.
6.      Be communicative – if you’re unsure of something ask. If you’re upset come and talk to me first.  Keeping those communication channels open is essential in building a trusting, successful team.
7.      Be healthy- a basketball season can be long and grueling, make sure you look after your body. Always warm up & cool down, stretch, eat good quality food, stay away from soft drinks, and especially energy drinks. At no time will you be able to practice or play to your maximum potential if you have consumed energy drinks. Make sure you get adequate sleep. A lack of sleep will eventually catch up with you, and wear you down.

Practice
Practice is one of the most important components of being successful. The more you develop solid practice habits, and the harder you work the greater success you will have. Tell yourself every day, “Today I am going to get a little bit better”
1.      Come 15 minutes before practice starts, get changed and be ready to go.
2.      Make sure you come to practice with your designated practice gear.
3.      Bring a water bottle (do not share a water bottle)
4.      Wear clean basketball shoes with proper ankle protection.
5.      Come to practice with a clear idea or goal of what you want to achieve, for example today I am not going to miss any uncontested layups.

*For those that worked hard to get better remember what it took. Find the time to continue to work on those skills you have developed. It will pay off.

"People have always doubted whether I was good enough to play this game at this level. I thought I was, and I thought I could be. What other people thought was really always irrelevant to me."
Steve Nash

Travel
Now that you are in junior basketball there will be more traveling. Our team will travel either by activity bus (24 passenger bus) or a chartered bus from the school district. When traveling on long trips it is good to bring a pillow for comfort.
Travel is a big part of our season. In order for this to be as safe as possible there are guidelines
that need to be followed when travelling. Conduct on the bus must be quiet, respectful, and calm. Passengers must remain seated in their seat whenever the bus is moving or operating in or around traffic. Passengers may only enter and exit using the front door. Emergency exits are for emergencies only. Horseplay of any sort will not be tolerated. Keep the bus clean and tidy at all times. All bags and gear must be stowed in the luggage cage(s).

In addition to the NVSS dress code, ball caps and head, arm or wristbands will not be worn on travel or game days. Under garments worn under the uniform must not be visible and should match jersey colour exactly. Players are expected to dress up on home game days. Any changing must be done in the change room. All jewelry must be removed and safely stored as part of practice and game preparation. Players should have a checklist to go over before travelling to ensure they have all preparations done. For example:

            - paid team fees to the office
            - have food or meal money and other expense money for entire trip
            - given trip itinerary to parents
            - packed all game gear (socks, shoes, all uniforms and warm up top, team bag,                            ankle braces, etc.)
            - packed all clothes, toiletries, etc.
            - other?

Nutrition
Nutrition and rest are important parts of fitness. It is important to have consistent sleep patterns, and a balanced, complete diet with lots of variety. Select foods that contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. Eat “healthy” and get plenty of sleep each day. Drink your recovery drink immediately after training or competition.

Expenses
Player expenses can be reduced if parents choose to set up a fund raising committee and coordinate player fundraising efforts. These team expenses each season include transportation, medical and equipment supplies, entry fees, Viking Invitational (including referees), officiating, coach per diem and accommodation, player defaults on fees uniforms, awards banquet, misc. – lost equipment, uniforms, etc., practice reversibles and team t-shirts.
Thanks already to White River Contracting for sponsoring the team uniforms and a major fundraising activity that will make approximately $2,000.00. Fund raising may include bottle drives, Canteen management during tournaments etc. Please don’t be afraid to bring forth any idea, every little bit helps.
Uniform Care
Care of uniforms is important. They are to be washed in cold water and hang-dried only. All uniforms and warm up tops are to be washed and returned with the team bags on or before the first Friday following our last game of the season.

This year our uniforms will be used both in games and practice so please make sure they are well cared for. Remember you are responsible for these uniforms. They are not cheap to replace so care for them so they last.

Thank you so much for your commitment. With continued hard work, this season should be a rewarding, fulfilling one for every one.

Thanks,

Coach Mueller

I ____________________________have read and discussed this season outline with my parents. I understand the expectations and the commitment it is going take to make this season  fun and rewarding for all.

Junior Boys Basketball Pre Season News letter

Welcome every one to what’s shaping up to be a fantastic basketball season!  Generally we only have one junior boy’s basketball team, however due to increased interest, those numbers have grown and we will now be fielding two junior teams. We will have a grade 9 team as well as a grade 10 team. Tyrone Reader a brand new teacher to our district, but not to our town will be coaching the grade 10’s this year. He will bring with him a wealth of basketball knowledge and enthusiasm, while Vaughn Mueller will be returning once again to coach the grade 9’s. Both coaches will work together with similar philosophies to teach and develop the necessary skills that these young players will need to be successful at the next level.
Individual work outs
The off season has been a good one as many of our players made regional teams, played club basketball, attended basketball camps as well as practiced with Mr. Mueller’s through out the summer. As a result we have seen significant improvements in attitude, fundamentals and work ethic. We firmly believe that these improvements will pay off in the future. I would encourage all players to take advantage of these work outs to get ready for the season.
Scheduling
Both coaches are currently working on getting the schedule done for both basketball teams, and it should begin to fall together by mid November.  Please check the Viking basketball Blog at: vikesbasketball.blogspot.com for further updates. The schedule may involve more than one team traveling together. For example, the grade 9 & 10 teams may travel to a tournament with the senior boys. This has two advantages, travel costs would be reduced, as well as it is a great opportunity for mentorship.
Fundraising
We are in the process of ordering new uniforms as there are currently no uniforms for the grade 9’s. This will be an expense so if any one has any Ideas for fund-raising it would be gracefully accepted. In the past we have had a parent group in charge of fundraising.  For this year we will have two separate teams so we will have to have a group for the 9’s and one for the 10’s. Please let either Vaughn or Tyrone know if you have any great ideas for fund-raising. If there is no interest in fund-raising the season cost will increase as a result. Generally the main costs for the season, is as follows: Transportation, Hotel rooms, and $ for food on trips. It would be great to cut down on these costs if it is at all possible.
Supervision & Bus Driving
Coaching a season of basketball can be long and demanding, therefore any help with supervision and driving would be greatly appreciated. To drive the bus you must have a class 4 driver’s licence. If you are interested please contact either Vaughn or Tyrone.

Summer Training is Paying off
A few of the boys were fortunate enough to make the U-14 regional team this last spring and made huge improvements in their games as a result. http://www.basketball.bc.ca/ They learned from the experience and made further commitments to their games through out the summer.

Vanderhoof Products Dakota Clapperton (top role 3 rd from left) Braden Bray (bottom Left) and Jonathan Mueller future vike all made the U14 regional team. Congradulations boys.

Braden Bray also attended the PGC Academy basketball camp at http://training.pgcbasketball.com/sheepdog-leadership/and had a fantastic experience. http://www.pgcbasketball.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/PGC_brochure_final_2011.pdf Dakota Clapperton, Braden Bray and Beckett Fawcett participated in individual work outs with coach Mueller for the month of July. They worked on essential basketball fundamentals like: ballance, footwork, shooting, passing, and ball handling. In addition they have made the commitment to join the x-country team and to morning work outs in preparation for the season.

The Club basketball program http://www.basketball.bc.ca/index.php/club-basketball/list-of-registered-clubs was a huge success this year with over 20 grade 9/10 boys participating. All boys used the oportunity to improve their games and their chances of having a positive experience this up and coming season. They had a fantastic spring season that featured a tournament in Kamloops and Vanderhoof.

All in all the off season was a successful one, and I look forward to seeing the results of their hard work and sacrifice. Well done boys!

Local Boys Pivotal Members of Regional
Team At Summer Jamboree
Evelyn Dickson Student, Jonathan Mueller lived every basketball players dream this past weekend at the Provincial Jamboree. His team was down 1 against South Okanagan, when he was fouled going to the basket with 0.1 seconds left in the game. He stepped to the line for 2 shots. He hit both shots to win it, as an excited team mobbed him at the buzzer. “Its experiences like this that make the game so exciting” said, Coach Vaughn Mueller. It’s about the spirit of competition and the comraderee, I was extremely proud of Jonathan, not just because he is my son, but because he works so incredibly hard. He proved he has the ability to compete against the top point guards in the province.
6.’1” Dakota Clapperton was a force in the paint all weekend grabbing rebounds and defending the other teams top forwards. Mueller said,” Dakota really learned a lot from this experience, he knows what it is going to take to improve his game. Dakota is one of the hardest workers I have ever coached, and I know he will be working hard this summer to improve.”
Braedon Bray made some significant improvements in his understanding of the game. The biggest lesson he learned is to never ever give up. Braedon was initially selected as a reserve on the team, he was discouraged he didn’t make the top 10 but, decided to stay with it (when other reserves quit) and continue to go to practices, and work hard. He knew full well that he may not get the opportunity to go to the Jamboree. His hard work and perseverance paid off when one of his team mates was unable to attend. Braedon was able to play and as a result turned in some solid performances, and grew as a player as a result.
Jordan Unger had a fantastic weekend he made his presence felt on the fast break and on the defensive end of the floor. “I felt he discovered his natural ability, said Mueller. He is tall and slight but very quick and he really utilized that to make a difference in his game. If Jordan continues to work hard he will be a stand out in the future.
Mueller said“ ,he was extremely proud of all the boys, but especially the four Vanderhoof boys who made the commitment to travel twice a week to Prince George for late practices.  Mueller would also like to thank the parents who took turns driving . Over all it was a fantastic experience for every one”
Well done boys!

N.V.S.S. BASKETBALL INJURY RISK DISCLAIMER
CAUTIONARY STATEMENT

Basketball is a highly competitive, fast-action game that places demands on the individual player. For this reason, coaches will implement conditioning regimes that are based on scientific principles, and designed to enhance player endurance, quickness and playing skills. While some forms of contact and rough play are prohibited by rule, a certain amount of inadvertent physical contact is predictable. To enhance stability and strength, certain weight room workouts may also be prescribed along with the regular practice activity. In addition, the following considerations and cautions will enhance player enjoyment and safety.

PREPARATION FOR ACTIVITY:

1.         Wear all pads, braces and supportive undergarments for all practices and competitions.
2.         Clothing and shoes should fit properly, be comfortable, and allow for maximal physical       efforts. Clothing should be kept clean and sanitary.
3.         Clothing should not prevent heat dissipation or restrict movement.
4.         Players should ingest the equivalent of 4 – 10 glasses of water each day.
5.         Feet should be covered with a thin athletic sock under an additional sock. If blisters are a     chronic problem or begin to appear, coaches or trainers should be consulted for   appropriate responses or preventative actions.
6.         Players who require corrected vision must wear shatterproof glasses or lenses. Glasses
must be mounted in break resistant frames and be held in place by an elastic strap.
7.         Players requiring preventative taping, padding, or bracing should arrive early enough to
receive treatment and be able to participate in specialty work.
8.         Remove all jewelry, "piercings", metal or sharp hair clips and hats.
9.         No horseplay, rough-housing, hazing or initiations.
10.       Players with seizure, neuromuscular, renal, cardiac, diabetic or chronic skeletal problems,    conditions, or diseases must present a physician’s approval prior to participation in any       practice or competition sessions.
11.       High top basketball shoes are suggested and they should be properly laced up.
12.       Ankle braces are recommended.
13.       Mouth guards are recommended.

IN THE LOCKER ROOM:

1.         Be alert to slippery floors.
2.         Be alert to changes in floor texture and elevated thresholds between lockers and
            shower rooms.
3.         Keep floors free of litter. Place all personal belongings in assigned lockers and keep them    locked.
4.         Keep soap and shampoo in the shower area.
5.         Use foot powder in designated areas only.
6.         Refrain from rapid movements, rough housing and horseplay in locker and shower areas.
7.         Inform coaches immediately of any skin or foot infections.
8.         Avoid bullying, hazing or initiation activities of any kind.

TRAVEL TO CONTEST/PRACTICE SITE:

NECHAKO VALLEY SECONDARY SCHOOL

PARENT / SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT

At Nechako Valley Secondary we strongly support the notion that all individuals are worthy of being treated with dignity and respect.  Sportsmanship and fair play are also foundation principles of the NVSS athletics program.  Parents and other spectators play an important role in supporting the athletes and coaches.  Young people look up to the adults who support them and we must be aware that our actions set an example for these young people.  All spectators are expected to follow the following Code of Conduct.

1.     Remember that participation in inter-school athletics is supposed to be fun.
2.     Coaches are volunteers and are important to the development of each athlete.  Communicate with them in a respectful way.  If you have concerns please bring them to the attention of the coach IN PRIVATE (it is usually best to make an appointment to meet on a non-competition day.)
3.     Do not criticize players, coaches, or officials in front of other spectators or athletes.
4.     Cheer in a positive manner and encourage fair play.  Applaud the efforts of both teams.  Do not taunt, demean or belittle any athletes, coaches, officials, or other spectators.
5.     Recognize that officials are doing their best to ensure that the event is played in a safe, fair manner.  Do not yell at officials or belittle the decisions they make.
6.     Avoid being a “grand stand coach or official”.  Encourage the athletes, but leave the coaching to those doing the job.
This Code of Conduct applies to any event, in any facility, in which NVSS athletes are competing.  Failure to follow the Code of Conduct could result in the parent/spectator being removed from the facility.  Continued failure to adhere to this code can result in a parent/spectator being banned from other events involving NVSS students.

Please sign and return the bottom of this form indicating you have read this Code of Conduct (both parents must sign the form).

ATHLETIC CODE

Athletes at NVSS are expected to be students in good standing as outlined in our school code of conduct.  In addition, student athletes should strive to demonstrate a high degree of sportsmanship and competitiveness within their sport and they must adhere to the following rules if they are to represent NVSS and School District #91.

1.       Players are expected to act as ladies and gentlemen at all times, as they are the representatives of this school.  As such, we want other schools to regard our teams with the highest respect.
2.       It is expected that ones personal appearance must always be neat and suitable to the occasion.
3.       Respectable hours should be kept, especially the night before a game.
4.       All players must be in school on the day of a game.  If you are too sick to be in school, you are too sick to participate.  Only exceptional circumstances will alter this rule.
5.       All players should be working to their potential in all school subjects.  If it is found that this is not the case, the principal will rule as to ones eligibility to play and/or for the length of a suspension.
6.       The use of drugs, tobacco, or alcohol will not be tolerated.  In our athletic program, we expect a great deal of dedication from our players and they are expected to make the sacrifice in this matter.
7.       Playing on a team is a privilege.  Players are to show respect for their coach at all times.
In the event that a violation of this code requires intervention, beyond the coaching staff to include school administration or athletic committee , the following actions may be taken.

  1. Immediate suspension from participating in any extra curricular activity sponsored by NVSS.
  2. Conference with player concerned, coach, Athletic Director, and school administration.
  3. Referal to the Athletic Discipline Committee.

Should re-instatement occur and a second offense result, the player may be removed for the season.
